Belgian Blue

The Bleu-Blanc-Belge (BBB) is bred in strains for meat-milk and meat production. The animals of the meat strain are medium to large and stand out for their extreme muscles. They come in three colours: White, black-and-white, blue-and-white.

An appreciable 80 per cent of the animals of the meat strain have the double-muscled gene CP (French designation: „cul de poulain“). A natural mutation in the gene which codes myostatin, a protein inhibiting the muscle growth, ensures distinct muscles. Moreover, this also inhibits fat deposit which leads to an extremely lean meat.

Sizes and weight
Bulls reach a withers height of between 155 and 170 cm, and a grown animal weighs between 1,100 and 1,400 kilograms. Cows grow up to between 140 and 150 cm, and reach a final weight of between 800 and 1,000 kilograms.

Advantages and useful value
High utilisation, best carcase quality and a high share of valuable pieces are characteristic features of the Belgian blues.

Origin and spread
The main breeding area is the southern part of Belgium with Ardennes high plain and the fertile arable farming areas. The Belgian blues can be traced back to a native breed, which was cross-bred with Shorthorns at the end of the 19th century. First of all, two-strain cattle was aimed at. Starting in 1950, part of the population was used to primarily breed variants with a lot of muscles.
The Belgian blues are bred primarily in Belgium with a population of about 1.5 million animals.

P&M with its headquarters in the Ardennes high plain permanently has a large choice of this excellent meat, in "as-grown" cuts.

P&M wishes you a lot of success with this quality product!
